Managing risk in a changing climate

A research partnership which seeks to help business, industry and government agencies mitigate the impacts of climate change and extreme weather events is set to lodge a bid for funding with the Federal Government.

The partners - the University of Southern Queensland, the Australian National University and the UK Met Office Hadley - propose to develop practical risk management technologies, practices and tools to assist organisations manage risk under a changing climate.

They will apply for funding to establish the Cooperative Research Centre for Climate and Weather Risk Technologies (CRC for CWRT).

An independent economic modelling study reveals that a ten-year investment of $160 million in the CRC for CWRT could deliver at least a $1.68 billion return modelled over 10 years by reducing the impact of:

  • Heatwave (heat-related death, fires, loss of productivity)
  • Precipitation (floods)
  • Tropical cyclones
  • Storm/sea surge/inundation
  • Storms (heavy rain, hail, snow)

Currie has assisted with the creation of a corporate tagline, Business confidence in a climate of uncertainty, a set of messages which appeals to potential investors and partners, and the timely delivery of an organisational profile ( View CRC Brochure ) that makes the case for support.
